Learn British Sign Language Online - Free, Interactive & Effective

BSL (British Sign Language) is the primary language of the Deaf community in the UK, used by over 150,000 people. Learning BSL is not just about vocabulary - it involves understanding handshapes, body locations, movement patterns, non-manual markers (eyebrows, head movement, mouth shapes), and Deaf cultural context.

SignDeaf's interactive learning cards give you all of this in one place. Every sign card is built from real linguistic data: CEFR proficiency levels (A1 to C2), handshape codes, body location descriptors, palm orientations, two-handed vs. one-handed classifications, and much more.

Unlike simple flashcard apps, SignDeaf teaches you how signs work - not just what they mean. The expandable Grammar Focus section on each card explains the non-manual features that change a sign's meaning, while the Deaf Culture & Context section reveals the social and community significance behind signs.

With 526+ signs in the database, a daily goal system, XP tracking, and 8 distinct learning modes, every session is personalised to your level and learning style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BSL the same as ASL (American Sign Language)?

No. BSL and ASL are completely different languages, even though both countries speak English. BSL uses a two-handed manual alphabet, while ASL uses one hand. They have different grammar, vocabulary, and cultural backgrounds. SignDeaf focuses exclusively on BSL as used in the UK.

How long does it take to learn BSL?

At A1 level, learners can communicate basic greetings and needs after 20–40 hours of study. Reaching conversational B1 level typically takes 100–150 hours. Consistency matters more than duration - even 5 signs per day (your daily goal) leads to over 1,800 signs in a year.

What are non-manual markers (NMMs) in BSL?

Non-manual markers are facial expressions, head movements, mouth patterns, and body positions that are grammatically essential in BSL. They're not optional - eyebrow position changes a statement to a question, and certain mouth morphemes create entirely different words. SignDeaf documents these on individual sign cards in the Grammar Focus mode.

What does the XP system do?

XP (experience points) tracks your learning effort: +10 XP for each sign you know, +3 XP for saving a sign, and +20 XP for every 5-sign milestone. XP accumulates to unlock new levels (Seedling → Explorer → Conversationalist → Fluent Signer and beyond). Logged-in users with a paid account also unlock achievements for milestones like learning 10, 50, 100, 250, and 500 signs.

Can I use SignDeaf to learn BSL from scratch?

Yes. Start with Beginner mode (A1–A2) for essential vocabulary, then progress through Intermediate and Advanced. Use Grammar Focus to understand how BSL grammar works, and Deaf Culture mode to learn the community context that makes BSL a living language - not just a translation of English.
